01 Case Study Overview

Championing inclusion and independence for over 70 years

Activ Foundation, Western Australia’s largest registered NDIS provider, has been dedicated to supporting over 1,800 individuals and their families for more than 70 years. As a leader in the disability services sector, Activ has consistently pursued a mission to foster more opportunities, build confidence, and create a sense of belonging for individuals with disabilities.

With a clear vision for expansion and a need to adapt its digital presence, Activ required a cohesive digital experience to not only strengthen its brand but also to drive lead generation and enhance its advocacy initiatives.

02 The Challenge

Unifying Activ’s digital presence for a cohesive, scalable future

Activ required a modern and cohesive digital experience to strengthen their brand, support lead generation, and amplify advocacy. Their previous website, spanning multiple domains, offered an opportunity to create a more unified platform that could effectively communicate the full breadth of services offered. With plans to grow their market share in priority areas, Activ needed a website that could meet the needs of various stakeholders – people with disabilities, their families, carers, sponsors, and job seekers – while balancing competing priorities.

The challenge was to create a seamless digital experience across several domains that could grow and evolve alongside Activ’s family of services. Additionally, there was a need to integrate a separate microsite into the main site and streamline site management to enhance the user experience.

03 Our Approach

A people-first approach

Clue’s approach began with comprehensive conversations and design workshops with the Activ team to ensure that all stakeholders’ needs were captured and understood. The solution was crafted around three core principles:

  1. Understanding people’s needs
  2. Designing with purpose
  3. Building for scalability

Clue employed data-driven design techniques, prioritising accessibility, and developing a user interface that fostered a positive connection with Activ’s brand. The site’s information architecture was carefully structured to support intuitive navigation and user engagement, particularly for actions related to donations, sponsorships, employment opportunities, and training programs through Activ’s Pathways RTO.

To ensure ease of management and efficient resource use, Clue recommended WordPress as the content management system. This choice aligned with Activ’s existing digital resources, providing a robust, user-friendly platform that could grow and adapt alongside Activ’s evolving needs.

Clue then implemented a suite of essential features, including an integrated training course finder, an accommodation locator, and a picture-heavy design that showcased Activ’s story visually. A platform analysis explored options such as Contentful and Sitefinity, though ultimately WordPress was selected due to its familiarity and scalability for nonprofits.

The website development addressed several key functional needs. Accessibility was a top priority, with the integration of plugins to enhance usability for people with disabilities. The platform was optimised for lead generation, incorporating clear calls to action throughout the site.

To unify the user journey, Clue integrated a dedicated Pathways microsite within the main site, ensuring brand consistency while preserving separate functionality. Additionally, ecommerce capabilities, a sticky navigation menu, and a comprehensive search function provided a seamless user experience.

Clue also incorporated tools to simplify internal management, such as online enquiry forms, integrations with Activ’s career and training platforms, and automated emails, alongside a brand-refreshing visual design that utilised dotted lines, arrows, and warm photography to reinforce Activ’s identity.

04 The Outcome

A digital platform built for growth and inclusion

Launched in December 2023, the new website is a transformative enhancement of Activ Foundation’s digital presence. It combines high functionality with an approachable, visually engaging design that communicates Activ’s mission and expands its service capabilities. The inclusion of unique features like the training course finder, accommodation locator, and integrated ecommerce elements broadens the platform’s functionality, helping Activ drive lead generation, service engagement, and community support.

By unifying previously separate domains and streamlining site management, Clue has created a scalable, adaptable digital solution that positions Activ for ongoing growth and strengthens its mission to empower individuals with disabilities across Western Australia.
