THE MASTER PLUMBERS AND GAS FITTERS ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Elevating Industry Standards:
The Digital Transformation of Master Plumbers WA
01 Case Study Overview

A century of excellence

The Master Plumbers and Gas Fitters Association of Western Australia (MPGA), established in 1901, has played a crucial role in maintaining the standards of the plumbing industry within Western Australia. Dedicated to protecting consumers and supporting plumbers across the state, MPGA ensures its members meet rigorous standards of professionalism. Plumbers who pass the association’s criteria are distinguished as “Master Plumbers,” a title that signifies trust and expertise.

As the association grew, it became evident that its digital presence needed to evolve. Their previous website faced challenges in clearly communicating the full range of membership benefits, and the manual sign-up process required streamlining to improve efficiency.

MPGA required a digital transformation to streamline business processes, enhance communication, and support both members and consumers. Clue, as a digital solutions agency, was engaged to lead this website redesign and modernisation project.

02 The Challenge

Simplifying membership, strengthening community

MPGA’s website had remained unchanged for several years, creating opportunities for improvement. Enhancing navigation for both members and consumers, as well as more clearly showcasing the value of membership, became key priorities.

Additionally, the manual membership sign-up process required significant administrative work, frustrating both new members and the association’s staff. Another key challenge was ensuring the new site could serve two distinct audiences – plumbers seeking membership and consumers searching for qualified plumbers. The new website needed to be user-friendly and effectively convey the association’s benefits to both audiences, while automating the membership process to save time and effort.

03 Our Approach

More than a website: A hub for plumbers and consumers

MPGA partnered with Clue to transform its website and content strategy, ensuring it better served members, sponsors, and the broader plumbing industry in Western Australia. Through deep engagement – including attending events, training sessions, and consulting with the executive committee, Clue gained valuable insights from members, non-members, sponsors, and associate members. This research informed the development of customer personas and journey maps, revealing key opportunities to enhance membership engagement and loyalty.

A major takeaway was the need to clearly communicate the benefits of membership while making information easier to find. To address this, Clue refined the website’s structure and introduced a mega menu, streamlining access to essential resources, services, and membership benefits. Clear, concise messaging was crafted to highlight the association’s role in fostering partnerships, networking opportunities, trade days, and exclusive benefits like Toyota discounts, reinforcing MPGA’s value to the industry. Clue also automated the previously manual membership sign-up process, enabling online registration and payments with flexible yearly and bi-yearly options, significantly reducing administrative workload.

A key addition was the “find a plumber” tool, helping the public connect with accredited members and positioning Master Plumbers as trusted professionals. The members-only area was also redesigned to offer exclusive legal documents, business templates, guides, and newsletters, ensuring ongoing support. Visually, Clue replaced outdated graphics with real imagery from Western Australian plumbing organisations, incorporating the brand’s signature blue to create a professional yet approachable look. This comprehensive overhaul positioned MPGA as a modern, forward-thinking organisation dedicated to supporting both plumbers and consumers.

04 The Outcome

A smarter network for WA’s plumbing community

The newly designed MPGA website dramatically improved the user experience for both members and consumers. The intuitive navigation, enhanced content strategy, and clear communication of member benefits helped to attract new members and improve retention. The website’s automation of the membership sign-up process eliminated days of administrative work, allowing staff to focus on higher-value tasks. The members-only area became a key resource, providing valuable business tools and reinforcing the sense of community among members.

The “Find a Plumber” tool, which allows the public to search for accredited Master Plumbers, was another critical success. This feature not only helped consumers find qualified plumbers but also promoted the importance of hiring a certified professional. The updated design gave the site a more modern and approachable feel, aligning perfectly with MPGA’s goal of supporting the plumbing industry in Western Australia.

Clue’s digital solutions have helped the Master Plumbers and Gas Fitters Association of Western Australia modernise their online presence and automate key business processes.
